Really bad week for bunny health -- and the bunny health budget.
Dayton Ash, the sweet young abandoned girl found with a broken leg in Richmond turned out to be pregnant. She had been confined to a carrier after surgery on her leg and gave birth to four seriously challenged babies who one-by-one passed away. Dayton was in bad shape when rescued, the vets didn’t want to further jeopardize her health with a spay. To make matters worse, she appeared to have a stuck kit, but after a rush trip to the vet and a set of x-rays, that wasn't the case. (The x-rays showed her leg is healing really well, though!)
Things got much worse when two of the male rabbits neutered at our spay/neuter clinic last weekend came down with serious abdominal sores, followed by another five clinic rabbits over the next few days. :o It appears a very bad bacteria was present somewhere in the clinic setting (we suspect a fluids line), causing major subcutaneous skin issues in the abdomen (not the surgical sites). This type of necrosis is progressive and extremely serious and will most likely require multiple surgeries and treatments costing thousands of dollars.
Donations to our depleted Sick Bunny Fund are sorely needed!

🐰🐰🐰 HAPPY TAIL TUESDAY! 🐰🐰🐰
Milo and Daisy have finally found their forever home. You might remember these two as babies at The Bunny Cafe a while back. Well, they are fully grown now and this sister/brother duo is living their best life at home together. Here is what their older (human) sister had to say (PS, swipe till the end for baby photos):
"Meet Daisy (perfect black) and Milo (white and spotted) (previously Millsy and Kuzy). They were adopted from the shelter as a pair in August, and ever since their bond has grown immensely. Milo is very chill and enjoys cuddles from both his sister and his human. Daisy is a bit more independent and she definitely shows that with her cute and sassy personality! They have a sibling bond and it can be a little tricky sometimes. Every so often we see Daisy chasing Milo down like he is a giant piece of lettuce 🥗. Overall these buns are a perfect duo and they would never be traded for the world."

Our team had been working tirelessly to plan a spay + neuter clinic for both our buns and our greater community. And this weekend, everything came together (with just one flat tire). 🩷
With the dedicated support of Dr. Ryan Wong, Dr. Jennifer Miller, Dr. Adrian Walton, our clinic coordinators CJ and Chelsea, transport coordinator Deanna, and all of our incredible clinic volunteers, we neutered 19 and spayed 5 rabbits.
If you're wondering about the 3 girls who were dumped on our shelter property, one underwent surgery and we found she was already spayed. We elected to not put the other two through surgery, as they are likely spayed as well.
We even had a bonus pooch surgery, with our dog-friend Clapton getting a lumpectomy. With 26 total surgeries, it's safe to say that the weekend was a success!
PS - An extra special thank you to the guys over at Fowler Auto & Light Truck Repairs who came to our rescue - our bunny-mobile had a screw embedded in one of its tires. They offered to flat free of charge, squeezing us into their day because they knew we had a bunch of post-op bunnies that needed to get back to the shelter. Less than three hours and our spay-neuter team transport was back on track! 🐰🚐
Photo credits to Gail and Chelsea. Thanks for capturing the weekend you two!
