Bunnies + Blueberries!

Trigger warning: Animal abuse, injury, extensive gore. Update: bunny didn’t make it. The trauma was too severe - likely hit by a car. We’re hurting.

Today’s rescue has us sick to our stomachs; it’s a bloody reminder – this is what happens when you dump a pet rabbit. You are not setting them free. You are not letting them be “one with nature.” You are mutilating them. In many cases, you are murdering them.

This bunny was spotted and reported by a passerby in Richmond. The area is full of feral rabbits, but this one looked different. Lop-eared, yes, but also sporting a horrific facial injury, a mauled left side with his eye and ear torn from his frame. There was so much blood and tissue, you could see little else.

We've added photos of his attack. Not for shock factor or to sensationalize his pain, but to show the reality of dumping rabbits.

This bunny is just a juvenile, barely beginning his life. And already he was tossed away like an object that was no longer useful. But he matters.

He’s headed to triage now. We don’t know his chances, but we have to hope we got him in time.

If you are reading this and you have ever dumped a bunny, we don’t want to hear about it. We don’t want to know why you did it, how you were uneducated, or simply “didn’t know.” Now you do. What you did was evil – how are you going to pay for it?

Donate to a local rabbit rescue. Volunteer your time. Educate others on the horrors of dumping rabbits. You can’t take back what you did. But you can make a difference in the lives of future rabbits. Really, it’s the least you could do.
