RIP Joey, Maggie and Champ

It’s a sad month at Rabbitats.    We lost sweet Joey, one of our friendlier black bunnies picked up as a stray last year. He passed away at the vet’s from unknown causes, but the best guess is occult pneumonia. He was a young bunny and didn’t seem all that sick. Foster mom Lynn is devastated.   He was a hit at our bunny cafe visiting all the guests to get his treats.

We’ve also lost Champ and Maggie this month, soon after they were featured in our newsletter. Champ was the bunny observed to be in bad shape at our Delta barn. He had bites along his back but he was also displaying symptoms (hair loss, other oddities) of the weird genetics we’ve seen in bunnies from certain areas. (The other bunnies always seem to pick on these guys). He was in treatment for weeks, including surgery, but he never really perked up or gained weight, so we decided to let him go.
We also let Maggie go, the big white paralysed New Zealand girl who came with her dozen-odd brothers and sisters (and possibly parents) from a horrible meat bunny situation to the Coquitlam animal shelter, and we took them from there. Maggie showed serious bone loss via x-rays and lab testing, and it may be genetic and affecting the whole family. One rabbit from the litter already passed away before we took them, and now two more are showing signs of unsteadiness. A fourth litter mate was taken in today for some dental work.
Our vet bills are through the roof, so if anybody can help with our sick bunny fund, we’ll really appreciate it.
