Volunteer Adopt Foster

Rabbits acclimatized to outdoor living can do well in roomy, secure, outdoor enclosures. Learn how to adopt your own Backyard Bunnies.

Adopting Backyard Bunnies

Rabbits have been popular house pets for the past few decades, but most rabbits can be safely and comfortably housed outdoors. Rabbitats has many friendly, sturdy rabbits available for outdoor adoption.

Our rescued rabbits come spayed/neutered and vaccinated, saving you hundreds of dollars in medical bills. Plus, we will always take the rabbits back if it doesn’t work out.

Note that breeds NOT suitable include dwarfs, mini-rexes, and long-haired rabbits requiring regular grooming.

If you’re interested in adopting your very own Backyard Bunnies, fill out our adoption questionnaire. We can advise on housing and care.

Guidelines for Backyard Bunnies

Rabbitats can range in size and structure to fit your space and desired number of rabbits. There are, however, some important guidelines when housing Backyard Bunnies:

  • Rabbits must be in pairs or groups
  • They need protection from wind and rain
  • Their food must stay completely dry
  • The rabbits need room to run
  • The structures need to withstand attacks from area predators
  • The enclosure must include hiding areas
  • The rabbits should be secured at night
  • Designs should allow easy human access, for the benefit of both the humans and the bunnies

For full information on housing Backyard Bunnies, please read our Guide to Sanctuary Rescue.

How NOT to House Backyard Bunnies

Hutches are neither suitable nor ethical for housing rabbits. Issues include:

  • Too small
  • Awkward access to their hiding are, especially when bunnies are hiding
  • Won’t accommodate human interaction
  • Can be knocked over or broken by a predator
  • Limited options for enrichment
